Cooking School

Chiang Mai, Thailand

After our eventful day with the Elephants yesterday we opted for a bit of a lie-in today. The few days of walking until we could walk no more were taking a toll on us. When we eventually found our feet we headed off for some breakfast. This was my favourite breakfast of our whole trip, very simple noodle soup with meatballs that I spiced up a bit. Rebecca had Koh Soi a dish that is famous in the north of the country. As we were so tired and sore we decided it would be good to start the day with a foot massage. We headed over to the women’s prison, which is known for the best massage in the city, unfortunately, they were already booked up for the day.

We wondered around Chiang Mai in search of a massage, poking our heads into Wat Phra Singh  along the way. All the massage places were either closed or booked up, it just wasn’t going to happen. So we opted for a smoothie and a nap back at our hotel instead.

We woke just in time to head over to our pre-arranged cooking course just around the corner at Asia Scenic Cooking School. Along with six other students, we met our teacher, Fon, who took us to the local market to get started. Here she described the differences between local spices and herbs and the key ingredients into most thai cooking. We’d a few minutes to browse around the market were I picked up some mango and a new shirt.

Once back at the school, we started cooking. We were to make three dishes each, I chose to make, Pad See Uw (drunken noodles), Tom Yum Goon Soup (spicy), and Penang Curry (peanut based). Finally I had the chance to make food with the amount of spice I liked, instead of the ‘westernised’ versions we were being served. However I may have overdone it a little on the Tom Yum soup as it was very spicy, not too spicy to eat but perhaps one chill too many.

Overall the course was great, Fon had great english and was very talkative, she showed us the school’s organic garden and explained the importance of using different ingredients together. After the course they dropped us over to the Night Bizarre (the one we were trying to go to the evening before). The bizarre was great, we picked up loads of little presents for our families and friends.

After another long evening of walking around we caught a tuktuk back to our hotel. Were we had a few beers to close the day.
