Nose to the grindstone

I didn’t get much sleep sunday nite. Missing flynn mainly. It’s too early for homesickness. I dozed off around 3am only to awake for work at 7am.

Monday was filled with learning the ways of Dara Creative. That took about 3 hours, it was hard to believe how much their processes are the same as those i’m use to. The major difference is it looks like i will be handling almost all of the project management after the estimate has been approved. Another difference is the amount of work that they contract out. To set up my email, they called their “IT Department” which is actually a company down the street.

We went through most of the clients, current and past jobs. Dara’s portfolio is quite impressive and a bit intimidating. There are only nine employee’s, 5 are designers, two who are fantastic illustrators and it is seen in much of the work produced.

The work space is small. This is not a complaint, it seems to be very cozy. The building has a downstairs lobby and separate printer room and conference room. The upstairs has several offices and a studio where 5 of us sit.

The remainder of the day was spent eating lunch in the garden, and surfing the web. Most clients around here take the first two weeks of August off so there is not much work to do right now. But next week should pick back up. There are several jobs in the hopper.

The commute into work was good, only took me 15 min. Not too bad. The way home was a bit longer simply because of i have to go out of the way just to get to a one way street going the right way. The way home is much more confusing and not as direct. I’ll get the hang of it after a few more attempts.

Tuesday i headed to work a bit late because i had to stop by the immigration office and get registered, get a pps number (like ssn), then get my tax info taken care of, so i can get a bank account, so i can get paid. I got as far as applying for a pps number. Hopefully it will come through by the end of this week. Money is running thin, and i can’t get a wire until i have an account. No worries though, dara said they can front me if i’m in need.

The second day went just fine, got in a few pojects, just some updates to some templates. normal stuff.

Jess insisted on making dinner again. I can’t complain.

Words for the day:
Feck and Shite: everything is fecked and it’s all shite. This is said by everyone and heard everywhere; work, streets, markets, even in church (or so i’ve been told).
